The Amajambere Camp was founded in 1994 by 33 families from the area: the Amajambere Iwacu Community Group or 'AICG'. These were people who lived and worked within the current area of the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park prior to its gazetting in 1991 when many were left without land or home. Some were forced into homelessness, others into homes far away or into the already crowded homes of their relatives. It was in 1994 that 33 families pooled their resources, formed AICG, and bought this campsite. 'Amajambere Iwacu' means, literally translated, 'Development at our place'. That was also the general idea. As the campsite received guests and began to make a profit, AICG used their earnings to support other community initiatives in the same area. This culminated in the forming of another organisation in 2003. We are proud members of the Mgahinga Community Development Organisation, or ' MCDO', which works to support us and similar community initiatives in our area. Part of Amajambere Camp's profits are used to fund MCDO and we also provide this organisation with an office at our campground. You are most welcome to ask our employees or to visit this office directly in order to learn more the other community initiatives which your visit helps support. |
